Michelle Obama’s Victory Garden

During World War II, in an effort to strengthen the homefront, American residents were encouraged to seed “Victory Gardens. ” rooftop vegetable garden

These kinds of were plots of land, large or small, used to grow fruits and vegetables.

As food items were being sent to it’s soldiers overseas and basic food commodities like milk, eggs and spread, ended uphad been rationed at home, the us government asked it’s people to expand their own fresh produce. 

The response of those was overwhelming.

Inspired by the first lady, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, who planted a “victory garden” on the White House lawn, almost 20 million Americans, shifted by patriotic fervor, commenced planting vegetables wherever they could find space. Gardens, empty lots and even city rooftops were improved into vegetable gardens.

The results?

Fruit and fruit and vegetables harvested in these home and community plots was estimated to be 9-10 million tons, an amount corresponding to all commercial creation of fresh vegetables.

The program boasted morale, came the people together in a common cause, and gave everyone a sense of pride, that they too were making a meaningful contribution to the war effort.

Unfortunately, when the war ended in 1946, most Americans postpone their gardens and went back for their former ways.

Michelle Obama’s recent decision to plant a “victory veggie garden” on the Light House lawn is also designed to mobilize and motivate Americans. Her intentions, however, are different than patients of Mrs. Roosevelt.

America today is engaged in a different sort of type of warfare. We may the Circumstance. S. is battling on two separate fronts.

Mrs. Obama’s first goal is to teach Americans, individuals and children alike, the value of eating locally cultivated, organic and natural whole foods. We all have gotten away from the basics of reasonable nutrition.

One of the main causes of disease in the U. S i9000. today is obesity. Really common even amidst children.

Cancer and heart disease, which account for 90% of deaths in America, are caused, in most cases, by a shortage of fruits and fresh vegetables in our diets.

Whenever we add in a non-active lifestyle and the ingestion of animal and sophisticated foods, we are rooting our graves with our forks and knives.

Michelle Obama, has taken a brave step in striving to educate America on the need to eat right.

The 2nd front we are presently fighting is the downward spiral on the planet economy.

Mrs. Obama is showing us a way, by growing our own food, to save cash and create a lasting lifestyle. Local, affordable, healthy food should be the right of everyone and not merely the privilege of some.

Hopefully Americans will take Mrs. Obama’s concept to heart and follow her example.

Though the danger facing America today is less immediate than it was in 1944, it is no less grave. In several ways it is even more threatening.

By simply planting vegetable gardens, each of us is making a personal and open public statement, that we are focused on a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle, that will preserve us and our children in the years to come.
